Enclosure. 9th Dec 1899 With sub-enclosure.

99

With reference to your despatch No.128 of the 15th July 1899 and to my despatch No.353 of the 3rd ultimo, relating to the grant of a site in the Taipingshan resumed area for the improvement and extension of the Tung Wah Hospital, I have the honour to inform you that I have received a further letter from the Chairman of Directors, a copy of which I enclose herewith, pointing out that in order to plan the building according to modern science it has been found necessary to appeal to the Government for the grant of an extension to the site already granted.

2. I have fully considered the circumstances which have led the Directors to approach the Government on this matter, and am satisfied that the request made by them is one which should be granted, not only in view of the liberal manner in which the Chinese community have supported this institution, but because of the saving to the general Revenue of this Colony which must result from an extension of the Tung Wah Hospital.

The Right Honourable JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P. &c. &c.

3. I have therefore granted the extension
